127 Protesters Arrested in Louisville

In cities across America, the sounds of helicopters filled the air last night, by now a familiar sign of protests being heavily monitored by the police. Following the announcement that no one is being directly held liable for the murder of Breonna Taylor, protesters took the streets in cities from New York to Louisville.

As reported in the Louisville Courier Journal, “Louisville police arrested 127 people during Wednesday protests following the announcement that just one of three Louisville Metro Police officers who fired shots in Breonna Taylor’s apartment will be criminally charged, and one suspect was arrested after LMPD officials said two officers were shot that night.” Among the arrested were at least two reporters. The New York Times reports that neither officers’ wounds were life-threatening.

The summer’s ongoing conflicts between police forces and protesters have reinforced that most police forces are much more white than the communities they serve. Research has found that “white officers are more likely than Black officers to use guns or other force in neighborhoods where the…
