A Defund Delay

Perhaps you remember this bit of good news that came in the wake of George Floyd’s killing: On June 7, a veto-proof majority of the Minneapolis City Council voted to dismantle the police department in favor of an alternate system of public safety.

But last week, the Washington Post reported that the proposal for the public safety agency was blocked by the Minneapolis Charter Commission, delaying the city council from getting the issue on the ballot for November 2020. Defund the police? Not this year.
