A New Day for a Non-White Jesus? Archbishop of Canterbury Says It’s Time

As a person who attended Catholic school for 12 years of my life, I’ve never seen an image of Jesus that didn’t resemble a man with bright blue eyes and long brown hair. After centuries of the same images, it’s safe to say it’s time for a new reimagining — and the Anglican Church agrees.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England, said that it’s time for us to think of a new way to portray Jesus, especially in light of the recent Black Lives Matter protests.

“You go into their churches and you don’t see a White Jesus — you see a Black Jesus, or Chinese Jesus, or a Middle Eastern Jesus — which is, of course, the most accurate,” he told the BBC Radio’s “Today” program.

A welcome change, a long time coming.

Momentum is a blog that captures and reflects the moment we find ourselves in, one where rampant anti-Black racism is leading to violence, trauma, protest, reflection, sorrow, and more. Momentum doesn’t look away when the news cycle shifts.
