It’s the close of 2020, and Black Santas are in high demand.

“A visit to Black Santa tops the holiday to-do list for many socially conscious parents everywhere,” writes Kenya Woodard in Momentum.

“But,” Woodard continues, “as with all things that concern reality versus advertising imagery, there is some whitewashing.”

The nationwide news reports of Black Santas reflect, in their totality, the state of American anti-racism at this political moment. Frustration alongside hope. Ingenuity and resilience and the occasional sprinkle of awkwardness. Pain, joy, and the jolliness of a whole bunch of melanated St. Nicks.
