Professor Eve Ewing is known for a lot of things. She’s a sociologist at the University of Chicago, an acclaimed author who researches education systems, and the author of several Marvel comics. She is someone that many people listen to. For that reason, her take on capitalizing W when referring to White people is worth a read.

In order to face racism you have to name it and you have to see it. Allowing W(w)hite people to disengage from “White” without critically thinking about it is a mistake.

Says Ewing: “Unfortunately, this choice runs the risk of reinforcing the dangerous myth that White people in America do not have a racial identity.”

She unpacks her reasoning, backed with lots of research and links, at ZORA magazine.

Momentum is a blog that captures and reflects the moment we find ourselves in, one where rampant anti-Black racism is leading to violence, trauma, protest, reflection, sorrow, and more. Momentum doesn’t look away when the news cycle shifts.
