Civil rights icon and congressman John Lewis, who passed away on July 17 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, left behind an essay that was written shortly before his death, to be published on the day of his funeral. The message is “gone but not forgotten” personified. One last plea to, as Lewis puts it, “redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble.” “Though I am gone, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe,” Lewis wrote.
