Congratulations, America. We’ve Outlawed Lynching in 2022.
This week, the first week of March 2022, in a world recovering from a devastating pandemic, and amidst the backdrop of the threat of the third world war in 108 years, 157 years after slavery was abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment, 67 years after Emmett Till was brutally murdered for flirting with a White woman, and after 200 attempts to put a law on the books that bans the horrific practice, the Congress of the United States of America — the most advanced society in the history of the world — outlawed lynching and made it a federal hate crime. Congratulations, us. We are amazing.
After the passage of the bill by the Senate, the esteemed Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York, took to the floor — 54 years after the assassination of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr., 401 years after the first Black child was born in America, 159 years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and 67 years after Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama — and hailed the bill as “an important step forward as we continue the work of confronting our nation’s past in pursuit of a brighter and more just future.” Congratulations, Chuck. You are amazing.
