Cori Bush, Troy Nehls, Racism, Sexism and the Ongoing Demonization and Humiliation of Black Women

In 1962, when the brave, bold, fiery, and fiercely eloquent civil rights activist Malcolm X stated, “The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman,” he was right on target. Now, more than sixty years later, his deft words still ring true. The most high-profile, recent example (and there have indeed been many as of late) is the vitriol directed by Representative Troy Nehls of Texas toward Representative Cori Bush of Missouri.

The acid-tongued, conservative Republican congressmen took it upon his shamelessly arrogant self to refer to Representative Bush as “loud” and “mouthy.” Oh, by the way, did I mention that he referred to her husband, a man who served as a member of the US military, as a “thug?!” Yes, you read that correctly! Such drama presented itself after Bush defended her use of campaign funds, which included hiring her husband for security services, given that she, like several other members of color in Congress, had been the target of death threats.
