If you’re anything like me — or like most human beings — the perfect comeback almost always seems to arrive hours or days or even weeks too late. Someone catches you off guard with an unfathomable zinger, and although you have the perfect retort tucked away somewhere in the recesses of your brain, you’re so flustered by the stupidity of it all that their words get in the way. You can’t quite access your brilliant response.

That’s called being human, and it’s a state of limitations that the Republican Party has been routinely using against Democrats ever since the GOP fell under the spell of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Sometimes I wonder if the folks on the right side of the aisle continue to drop inanities like the recent pro-Putin garbage in hopes that our shock will tie our tongues and render them useless in promptly delivering the right comeback.

Trump loyalists, in particular, are experts at this. Since they aren’t overly concerned with depth, nuance, or rational reasoning anyway, it’s easy for them to stop making sense in order to trip us up on the political battlefield. I see this ploy in play every time Republicans trot out their tired and untrue rants about critical race theory.
