America’s official holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is on his birthday this year, January 15th. And if you believe in his message of peace and nonviolence, his anti-war Christmas sermon is one you don’t want to miss. His message should be one that is embraced in modern times. Forget about the “I Have A Dream” speech, the one often used as a sort of con to sideline Dr. King’s other powerful messages related to poverty, inequality, and militarism. In his Christmas sermon speech, Dr. King was speaking to the entire human race about violence, war, and the desperate need for peace.

How dare he speak to the entire human race, right?

Well, he has something to say.

In the first line, he says it all:

“This Christmas season finds us a rather bewildered human race. We have neither peace within nor peace without. Everywhere paralyzing fears harrow people by day and haunt them by night. Our world is sick with war; everywhere we turn we see its ominous possibilities.”

Dr. King gave this sermon in 1967 at the very end of his earthly ministry, discussing the brutal and violent times people were living through. There are loud wars and quiet wars in the world. The Israeli-Gaza…
