We Americans love to proclaim our leadership over the rest of the world.

Our education is changing some, but American superiority in science, technology, freedom and democracy was ingrained in us as kids.

We were led to believe Americans brought almost every good thing on the planet. All the world needs to advance is to adopt the American style of systems and government.

“U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!”

You know the chants.

As a world traveler, I know firsthand that we do plenty of things exceptionally well in America. I value those things and feel lucky to have been born here.

Our freedom of speech. Our right to demonstrate. Our robust freedom of the press. To write what we want, no matter what government official it offends.

I’m also keenly aware that despite crime in America, we aren’t under constant attack from outside militaries or terror groups. Imagine living in Syria, Sudan, the DRC, Myanmar, or Ukraine, where you could meet your maker at any time. Imagine being a woman in Iran.
