Growing Up Black in the ’Burbs

Those who have lived it know that growing up in the suburbs offers early exposure to the racial divide in this country if not just because of your experiences within your bubble, but for what you also become aware of outside of it. Within the border of the ’burbs, Blacks typically experience varying degrees of racism (from micro to overt) — see: neighbors being shocked that you live there, to schools where you are oft the only Black or Brown person in a class. Outside of the community, you become aware of the racial disparities when confronted with the haves and have-nots.
