The move to de-weaponize Karen is underway courtesy of Shamann Walton, a San Francisco supervisor who introduced an ordinance designed to fine people who make false and racially discriminatory 911 calls.

Walton discussed the move on Twitter.

Although it is already illegal in most places to make false claims to 911, Walton’s efforts make a lot of sense. His “Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies” act is genius. No matter what happens legislatively, it has made headlines and raised awareness of the issue most recently brought to light by people like Amy Cooper, who called the police on a Black birdwatcher after he asked her to curb her dog.

Per The Hill, “Walton’s bill comes after California Assemblyman Rob Bonta introduced a bill last month that would classify discriminatory 911 calls as a hate crime in the state.”

We will be following this proposal closely.

Momentum is a blog that captures and reflects the moment we find ourselves in, one where rampant anti-Black racism is leading to violence, trauma, protest, reflection, sorrow, and more. Momentum doesn’t look away when the news cycle shifts.
