Redlining Lives On in Black New York Neighborhoods and Why Black Women Struggle to Get Help for ADHD

The Black Brooklyn neighborhoods where Black people can’t get a home loan
It may not be a huge shock to learn that there are still places where Black people are denied home mortgage loans. But what about when those places are in the heart of the ‘hood (or at least, what used to be called the ‘hood, pre-gentrification)? According to an investigation by NYC news station WABC, there are several historically Black neighborhoods in the city where the mortgage loan denial rate for Black people was 100% from 2018–2019, including parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Many other parts of the neighborhoods had approval rates well under 50% for Black applicants, even in census tracts where the majority of the population is Black. This is a problem in gentrifying neighborhoods around the country, and these statistics illustrate how difficult it can be for Black families to stay in the areas where they’ve found community.
