Rest in Power Cicely Tyson
Decades of representation showcase a life well lived
One of the grande dames of American artistry passed away today. Cicely Tyson, the pioneering star of Sounder and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, was a force. The Tony, Emmy, and Presidential Medal of Freedom awardee also recently gained an honorary Oscar in 2018; she was the first Black woman to do so. Most recently she earned five Emmy nominations for her recurring role on How to Get Away With Murder. And just a week before she passed, she talked to Morgan Jerkins at ZORA magazine about her new book and general life advice from a 96-year-old who has seen damn near everything.
As the nation mourns the loss of a legend, her advice will no doubt come in handy when it comes to dreaming up new ways to dismantle unjust systems and conjure equitable success.
