Tech’s ‘Diversity Theater’ Penalizes Black Workers for Speaking Out

Black tech workers are speaking out against the industry’s “diversity theater,” the practice of preaching diversity and equity while punishing internal advocates, Sidney Fussell writes in Wired.

Workers at Pinterest, Facebook, and Google described retaliation for pushing the company to live up to stated values on diversity and equitable treatment of employees, taking the form of criticism in performance reviews, reprimands from human resources, or even being fired.

“Your life gets worse when you advocate for underrepresented people,” Google A.I. researcher Timnit Gebru wrote after being fired.
