Enough With the Officer Friendly Posts

We’ve all heard the adage about the one bad apple spoiling the bunch. But the question remains: Why are there so many bad apples?

This opinion piece delves into the idea that ignoring the main problem of police violence against Black people by bringing up alternative stories doesn’t actually solve the problem.

In part, writer Mickey Desruisseaux says this: “These cutesy stories, custom-made for social and traditional media alike, of officers doing the bare minimum to assuage the tensions that their brethren’s actions and inactions have allowed to simmer for years, are not enough. If they want to be hailed as a given city’s finest, as the best and bravest among the societies they work and walk, then a high five is not enough. A hug is not enough. A sign is not enough.”

Now, what do you say? We would love to hear your thoughts on the positioning of stories and how they impact — or don’t impact — the movement against anti-Black racism.

Momentum is a blog that captures and reflects the moment we find ourselves in, one where rampant anti-Black racism is leading to violence, trauma, protest, reflection, sorrow, and more. Momentum doesn’t look away when the news cycle shifts.
