America’s denial and defense of our sins and crimes is nothing new. We only need to look to the whitewashing of our American history books and the current fight over the 1619 project to know there is an undeniable force working to suppress the truth and ignore our violent and racist past.

It’s because so many Americans refuse to acknowledge and accept our past and present issues — or begin the hard work of restoration and reconciliation — an ugly uprising of White rage and hate has washed over our nation’s Capitol and it’s being denied and we’re being gaslighted again. Revisionist historians and racists would like to believe: a fed up group of patriots use their right to protest to vent their frustrations. When the reality is:

A lynch mob stormed the nation’s Capitol with the intention to hang the vice president, Speaker Pelosi, and anyone who didn’t support keeping their leader in power. In the process, they murdered and maimed police officers, stole and destroyed federal property, and literally defecated on the halls of our democracy. Their leader was acquitted for inciting this…
