Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have definitely heard about Will Smith slapping the shit out of Chris Rock at the Oscars two weeks ago. There’s a lot going on with this whole situation, which is continuing to unfold in real time, but I figured since I am a white woman, I will stick to talking about what I know.
Just to get it out of the way upfront, I am pro-slap. Or I am at least not anti-slap. For me, it has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with loyalty. It might not be the right way of being — I won’t argue that it is, and I can see why people may feel that it’s not. However, for who I am and how I work deep down on the inside on an almost primal level, I will do my best to eviscerate anyone who humiliates someone I love or makes them feel small or helpless, especially in front of other people. Will I do this with my words instead of my hands? Probably. I’m a white woman. Does that make me more civilized than someone who just hauls off and backhands someone instead? No. It makes me more cunning.
Why am I bringing white women into this? This situation between two Black men. Well, because white women have brought themselves into it. White women have overwhelmingly been the group at the forefront of the cancel-Will-Smith-for-being-a-violent-brute faction of the slap-heard-round-the-world fiasco (the “Black” between “violent” and “brute” is silent)…
