Anti-Black racism is becoming explicit again. We're seeing a systemic attack on topics like critical race theory and woke ideology, even though opponents are quick to avoid eye contact when you request they define the terminology. Like a child whose hand got caught in the cookie jar before dinner, they don't want to have to explain why they're fighting against diversity, equity, and inclusion. Or as Michael Harriot, columnist at TheGrio, suggested, "It's hard to get people to demonize human beings and lives and history. But it's easy to get them to demonize a word. And if you can use that word as a placeholder for those people, for caring about those people, then it's easy to demonize." By using the phrase anti-woke instead of anti-Black, conservatives created a space for racist ideas to spread like a summer wildfire and even codify their bigoted views into laws, a play taken from the segregationists’ handbook.

While we often think of anti-Black racism as something that exists on the fringes of society, the truth is racism was supported by the legal system throughout much of America's history. For instance, enslaving Black people was legal within fifteen states
